Characteristics of freshwater fish species in the Istrian peninsula

The ichthyofauna of the Istrian peninsula has never been systematically studied. In the 19th century scientifc data on the freshwater ichthyofauna of Istra were mainly published by Italian authors. The data published since the second world war have been rare, and the localities given in these papers were not specific . Theoretically, about 49 fish species have occurred on this peninsula. The results of our investigations were obtained by various methods of fshing on the rivers: Mirna, Boljnčica, Butoniga, Pazinčica, Raša, Račica, Podmerišće and the accumulation of Butoniga, Letaj and Rak stream. In ichthyological investigations carried out recently in fresh waters of the Istrian peninsula, 36 fsh species were recorded from 16 families. Of the freshwater species, 12 species were native, and 10 were introduced . In the fresh waters of Istra the most frequent fsh species are the White Chub (Leuciscus cavedanus), Tench (Tinca tinca), European Eel (Anguilla anguilla), Gudgeon (Gobio gobio) and Adriatic Barbel (Barbus plebejus). Especially emphasized is the degree of endangerment of certain species. Numerous endemic endangered species, whose habitats and finding places Croatia as the signatory country of various conventions on the protection of nature needs to protect, are found in the Istrian region such as: Acipenser naccari, Acipenser sturio, Lethenteron zanandreai, Aphanius fasciatus, Barbus plebejus, Alburnus albidus, Padogobius bonelli, and Pomatoschistus canestrinii. All these species are on the red list of endangered fsh species in Croatia.
