Lead in blood of children in Croatia – preliminary results
Blood samples were collected from children in urban, rural and industrial area in Podravina County, North West Croatia, during summer 2007. Sampling was performed as a part of the human biomonitoring programme in accordance with the EU FP6 PHIME project protocol and sampling strategy approved by ethical permission commission at Croatian Public health institute. Written consent was obtained from a parent of each child. Oral consent was obtained from the child before sampling. Interview and questionnaire data were also obtained. In total 149 school children (city – 52 ; rural – 55 and industrial – 42), mean age 8.7 with girls and boys equally represented, were recruited. A blood sample was analysed on lead, as well as for mercury and cadmium but only lead results are presented in this paper. Results shows that B-Pb median values in children were similar in urban, rural and industrial research area in Croatia. Corresponding means were 19.85 µg/L, 27.76 µg/L and 24.36 µg/L, respectively. The median values for Croatia are consistent with the corresponding values for this element for other European countries involved in PHIME study.
