Responsible Exploitation of the Sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walb.), Population in the Coastal Region of the Eastern Adriatic

The juvenile stocks protection in nursery grounds is one of the principal goals for the purpose of full recruitment. The strong 1983 year class sardine occurence resulted in abundant catches in the eastern Adriatic purse seine fisheries from 1983 on, in spite of enforced management regulation. It is unlikely that best results will be achieved by imposing those restrictions. Hense, juvenile fish were caught completely beyond scientific control. Identification of population, length and age composition, growth characteristic and stock size abundance changes in relation to the exert effort were investigated. Total fish in length (mm) and weight (g) were measured. Otoliths (sagittae) were taken for age determination. The length-weight relationship was established. Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) value were calculated on the basis of daily catch data, time spent searching for fish, luring fish by light was used as the unit effort. All investigated parameters resulted in a positive relationship in the sardine population during the time and in that area of investigation. Increasing catch per unit effort in the 1985-1987 period point to an increase in the sardine population in this area. However, during 1988 and1989, the absence of juvenile sardine was evident, probably due to the natural fluctuation influence in the appearance of strong age class. This is a very important indicator for the yearly prediction of the apprpximate size of the juvenile sardine population in this area.
