Shear Reinforcement in Masonry Lintels and Calculation of Deflection
The paper concerns upon lintels that have been assembled of prefabricated prestressed masonry beams and several brick courses. In earlier experimental testing of masonry lintels it has been shown that horizontal bed-joint-reinforcement did not contribute to the carrying capacity of lintels as much as shear reinforcement. Only the lintels with shear reinforcement have shown ductile behavior in post peak phase. Shear reinforcement protected lintel from premature crack formation in mortar courses above prefabricated masonry beam. In this paper, theoretical investigation was done to obtain mathematical model for load-deflection behavior of masonry lintel without and with shear reinforcement. In this theoretical analysis increasing external load, failure and post peak behavior have been considered. It has been shown both experimentally and theoretically that shear reinforcement contributed high to ductility and load capacity of such lintels. Comparison with experimentally obtained load-deflection curves showed a good agreement which led to conclusion that proposed theoretical analysis was acceptable.
