Research and development of article of clothing with adaptive microclimatic conditions

Current development is presented of articles of clothing with adaptive microclimatic conditions at the Department of Clothing Technology, Faculty of Textile Technology, University of Zagreb. The garments developed can be classified as intelligent clothing, since each article possesses controllable thermoinsulative chambers that offer optimal thermal protection, established based on measuring temperature employing outer and inner sensors and analysis of these measurements. Decisions regarding the behaviour are reached through intelligent behaviour algorithm on the necessary reactions, using a microcontroller system, while decisions reached are implemented by employing actuators which regulate and control the chambers. These types of garments are able to establish independently the necessary level of thermal protection, adaptable to the inner and outer temperatures and matching the physical activities of the wearer. This exhibits a degree of intelligent behaviour, i.e. behaviour that adapts to the changes in its environment. Basic principles are presented of two different approaches to the original developments in the area of articles of clothing with adaptive microclimatic conditions, key theses given that brought about the protection of intellectual property in the form of a number of patent applications, logo and design rights, The differences are also described among particular types of this class of garments and numerous technical solutions that resulted in their development.
