Experimental simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer flow and transient winds for engineering purposes
Effects of transient winds on structures have recently received increased attention in the wind engineering community. Efforts have been made to develop appropriate numerical models and experimental tools, which would allow simulations of transient winds and their effects on structures, air pollutant dispersion and outdoor human comfort. In this seminar, basic principles of several classical methods for the experimental simulation of non-transient atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow will be reported. Improved hardware for wind-tunnel simulation of the lower ABL portion developing above rural, suburban, and urban terrains will be presented. Results will be discussed in the light of the transient bora wind characteristics to evaluate the applicability of classical hardware (vortex generators, barrier, and surface roughness) for wind-tunnel simulations of transient winds. Design of several already existing facilities for the experimental simulation of transient winds will be presented. Some representative results on the cross-wind gusting of a vehicle will be reported.
