Lipid Peroxidation and Bone Regeneration
Tissue regeneration is complex biological process of vital importance since it allows renewal of damaged cells and organs. Therefore, wound healing is regulated by local and systemic factors which are species and tissue specific on one hand, while on the other regeneration depends on other less specific processes such as inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Healing of human long bones and large joints lasts for several months even in young and healthy adults, while it is further extended and often incomplete in elderly people. While biological background of so delayed healing is not understood, various attempts are done to solve this severe medical and social problem by development of novel bioactive materials, among which bioactive glass is the most attractive because of its osteoconductive and osteostimulative properties. Since lipid peroxidation was defined as important parameter of systematic stress response in patients with traumatic brain injuries and bone fractures it led to recent studies of molecular mechanisms of lipid peroxidation associated with bone growth regulation...
