Strengthening Regional Economic Cooperation in the South-Eastern Europe on the Way to Recovery

Work analyzes economic cooperation in the SEE region whose importance has additionally been shown during the time of crisis. SEE region constitutes a single geo-economic area so intensification of economic ties improves both resilience and competitiveness of regional economies but at the same time underpins political stabilization and reform processes within the EU accession process. First part of the paper evaluates regional economic cooperation that has been facilitated by the EU and international community in the 2000s. Nevertheless, greater economic cooperation in the SEE has its own internal dynamics as well as it belongs to the “new regionalism” trends that favour greater regional cooperation across different economic fields. Second part of the paper deals with the impacts of economic crisis that caused major downturn and severely deteriorated economic conditions across the region. Consequently, the recovery will be slow and uneven, so paper in the last part argues proposals that could additionally facilitate regional economic cooperation and help in tackling the temporary hardships. Therefore, further trade intensification within the scope of CEFTA 2006 agreement, regional cooperation in the sectors of energy, infrastructure and communication networks together with development of more FDIs favourable policies and upgrading of human resources could represent valuable contribution in dealing with the crisis. In conclusion, regional cooperation in the SEE and the EU membership are two sides of the same coin, but the crisis has even more revealed the intertwined nature of these economies and necessity for their greater collaboration.
