Dynamics of height control in spray chrysanthemums affected by growth retardants
Plant growth retardants uniconazole (2 mg/l) and daminozide (2125 mg/l) were applied on two cultivars of year-round chrysanthemums (Dendranthema morifolium (Ramat.) Tzvelev)). 'Clingo' and 'Dark Westland' cultivars were grown in glasshouse from September to January (5 weeks long day and 10 weeks short day). Foliar treatments were applied one week before and one or two weeks after the beginning of short days. In 'Dark Westland' cultivar treatments were repeated after two weeks. Plant height was measured every week from planting to disbudding and after two weeks again, at the time of harvesting. At harvesting, in all treatments, plant height was significantly reduced, so that the hardness and quality of cut flowers was improved. Compared to the weekly height increase of the control, the retardants decreased plant growth after the treatment during the first 4-5 weeks. After that the retarding effect was diminished and in certain periods weekly height increases varied from the control in an extremly wide range.
