Geologija kornatskog otočja

Islands and mainland in wider Šibenik region (northern Dalmatia, Croatia) are predominantly composed of deformed Upper Cretaceous to Eocene pre-orogenic carbonates, detached from the uppermost crust of central Adriatic microplate (Adriatic-Dinaridic carbonate platform) during Dinaridic (Alpine) orogenesis. Syn-orogenic Flysch conformably, and Promina deposits unconformably overlay the carbonates, while thin Quaternary deposits in places cover all the older formations. Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene successions of carbonates from the region, and the succession from the offshore borehole Kate-1, are supposed to belong to the different tectonostratigraphical units. However, orogenic evolution and tectonic structure of the region are still a matter of debates. Stop 1: The ovrturned syncline of Škulj Islet is a typical SW verging Dinaridic structure. Stop 2: Exposure of fault-erosional scarp, selective erosion, and pelagosite crusts on southern Lavsa Island. Stop 3: Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene carbonate succession of eastern Lavsa Island. Stop 4: Unconformity between Upper Santonian / Lower Campanian and Lower Eocene carbonates on Ravni Žakan Island – correlation with Kate-1 borehole. Stop 5=Stop 1’ of field trip B1’(CUKROV et al., 2010): Submerged canyon of palaeo-Krka River.
