A ligand for the NKG2D receptor expressed by mouse CMV attenuates the virus, changes virus distribution and improves vaccine properties
The authors propose a model where an engineered cytomegalovirus serves as a potential vaccine. Namely, a ligand for the strong activating NK cell receptors is inserted into a CMV-BAC, and this feature makes the virus strongly attenuated in vivo in both immunocompetent and immunodeficient hosts. Infection of mice with this virus however elicited strong, long-lasting protective immunity.
