Recent changes in the phytoplankton community of the Adriatic Sea

Since the early 1960s, regular monthly observations of phytoplankton abundance, the structure of the phytoplankton community and primary production have been carried out at two stations in the middle Adriatic which are influenced to varying degrees by coastal and open Adriatic waters. These long term data series have been elaborated in relation to the impacts of anthropogenic eutrophication and chlimatic changes. Our analysis shows an increase of phytoplankton biomass and abundance in the period from mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. the shift in primary production have been connected with hemispheric and regional scale climate variations, and support the hypothesis that atmospheric variability can trigger ecosystem changes.
