Selective Determination of Chromium(III)and Chromium(VI) by Ion Exchange TLC
Chromium is commonly used in hexavalent and trivalent forms. Continuous use of chromium salts in a great number of industries has caused its dispersion in aqutic and soil environments. The EC Directive for drinking water states that total Cr should not exceed 0.5 mg/L. Hexsavalent species are more toxic and carcinogenic than trivalent and it is necessary to separate and determine the concentration of each ion. In this work a TLC method with speciation capability for chromium has been studied. Reagents for visualization Cr(III) and Cr(VI) have been tested (diphenylcarbazide, alizarin, alizarin S, quinalizarin, alizarin delphinol, dithizone, PAN (1-(pyridyazo)-2-naphtol) and PMAP (2-(2pyridylmethylenamono)-phenol). Improvement in the selectivity of TLC was achieved by changing the chromatographic properties of the support by physical modification. The sorbents tested use microcrystalline cellulose mixed with different ratios of solid anion exchanger Amberlite IRA-400 (10%, 20%, 30%). A number of solvent systems, solutions of organic and inorganic acids with ligands which form complexes with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) have been tested.
