Critical values of the parameters influencing stress corrosion of austenitic 18 Cr - 9 Ni steel in boiling MgCl2 solution
In the work critical values of the parameters influencing stress corrosion of austenitic 18 Cr -9 Ni steel in chloride medium have been described. The results have been obtained by stress corrosion measurements at constant mechanical load, by the tests at potentiostatic conditions and by metallographic investigation before and after these tests. The determination of critical potential of material sensitivity to stress corrosion is of a remarkable practical interest for forseeing probable defects due to stress corrosion and for cathodic and anodic corrosion protection of materials as well. The results obtained by stress corrosion testing show that for the corrosion system X5 CrNi 18 9 (JUS C.4571) / boiling solution of magnesium chloride critical potential exists which has to be exceeded to cause stress corrosion. This critical potential depends on tensile strength and with decrease of mechanical tensile strength it shifts towards more positive potentials.
