Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Energy Potential in Waste Management in Croatia
Main focus of this paper is given to the analysis of potential of measures of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction from the waste management in Croatia. Three scenarios of GHG emission reduction in waste management were defined: baseline scenario, with measures scenario, and with additional measures scenario. Energetic, environmental and economic benefits can be accomplished by utilizing municipal solid waste (MSW) and landfill gas as fuel in industry and energy sector, which is emphasized by this paper. The paper gives overview of measures for energy recovery from MSW and landfill gas that could be implemented in Croatia. These measures also represent measures for GHG emission reduction. Finally an economic evaluation of each scenario is presented. In order to determine the priority between the measures concerned, respecting cost-effectiveness, marginal costs were calculated and also marginal cost curve is shown. A sensitivity analysis conducted considers costeffectiveness of measures dependent on variation of relevant parameters.
