Nutritional Aspects in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children has different manifestations from in adults. This is mainly due to the impact of malnutrition on growth retardation and pubertal delay, which can usually be treated with adequate enteral nutrition (EN). EN has a proven role in the treatment of Crohn’s disease (CD), and it has been suggested that diet plays a role in the disease aetiology. The aim of this article is to present data on the role of nutrition in the aetiology and treatment of IBD, as well as in the treatment of malnutrition and growth failure in paediatric IBD. Based on the results of randomised, controlled trials (RCTs), current recommendations indicate that EN should be the first-line treatment in the induction of remission in paediatric CD patients, in addition to its role in the treatment of malnutrition. There is evidence supporting the use of EN as part of maintenance therapy in CD, but data are scarce and mainly generated in adults, and future RCTs are needed.
