Numerical modeling of fecal coliforms dynamic in the southeastern Adriatic

An overview of numerical modeling studies related with analysis of the parameters for temperature (T), salinity (S), sea currents (UV) and fecal coliforms concentration (FC) in the coastal part of the southeastern Adriatic is given. For the realistic simulations of the effluent plume spreading, created due to the operation of the 4 existing and 21 planned submarine outfalls, high-frequency changes in the flow dynamics of the sea recipient is obtained through the use of numerical models with the desired degree of spatial and time resolution. Two renowned models, ROMS and MIKE 3, were utilized in that sense. ROMS was used for the modeling physical parameters in the whole Adriatic basin, with spatial resolution of 2km in horizontal and 30 sigma layers in the vertical direction. Obtained ROMS results of sea temperature, salinity and sea level were further used as the open boundary transects at nested MIKE 3 model characterized with high spatial resolution of 200m in horizontal and 2m vertical direction. MIKE 3 is used among the physical part as well for the calculations of spatial and temporal changes in FC concentration fields. Near field transport process in the vicinity of analyzed submarine outfalls is resolved with numerical model using methodology similar according to Featherstone-a (1984). All numerical simulations were made for FC concentration dynamics in the winter period (February-March, 2008) when vertical stratification is not pronounced. Modeling results are verified with extensive datasets, obtained through national monitoring program.
