Surface active organic substances characterization in the sea surface microlayers

Surface active substances (SAS) and lipids are investigated in sea surface microlayers (MLs) by electrochemical methods and thin layer chromatography, respectively, in different areas of the Adriatic Sea. Statistically is proven that carbohydrates (CHO) and lipids significantly contribute to SAS pool. Carbohydrates appeared to be dominant SAS found in MLs masking effects of other organics. The evaluated concentration of CHO in investigated MLs was 1.5 to 2.0 mg/l contributing up to 34% in organic matter (OM) pool. Concentration of lipids ranged from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/l, contributing about 5% in OM pool. Lipid classes are good indicator of origin and the main processes controling OM in MLs. Trophic state is important for the lipid enrichment in ML, being more important in oligo- to meso- trophic than in eutrophic areas. OM accumulation in MLs showed seasonal varriability, and it is following OM accumulation in the subsurface waters. During summer OM concentrations are the highest both in subsurface water and in corresponding ML.
