Cultural Identity in the Perspective of Transformation and Democracy
Cultural identity in the postsocialist transitional Central European countries is being redefined in the context of the breakdown of corporate cultural identities (e.g., Yugoslav) and resurgence of ethnic, national and multuiple cultural identities. All postsocialist, and particularly central European, states stress their national character. However, they have been and remain multicultural, and often characterized by multiple cultural identities. The multicultural context that they sometimes tend to reject fully corresponds with the contemporary global cultural context. Cultural and social transformation should therefore be based on the full acceptance and respect of cultural diversity, which is the only sound basis for democratization of postsocialist societies.
