Whole-part relationship
A loose definition everyone can agree on is that relationships connect objects. One kind of structural connection is whole-part relationship that connects a whole to its parts. It is generally agreed that whole-part relationships (aggregations, compositions) are useful, but unfortunately, the exact semantics differ between object-oriented modelling approaches. In this paper, we briefly discuss properties of whole-part relationship. Employing examples, we present design patterns for whole-part relationship in both UML and OML. Included in this discussion is comparison between, UML and OML, concepts and semantics in order to propose an alternative metamodelling approach which enhance the existing ones.
