The Multicultural Mosaic of Croatia

The current reinterpretation of multicultural relations in Croatia is linked with the process of overall modernization, economic reforms, democratization and social changes, which should bring Croatia's multicultural scene in line with European and global standards. About 21,9% of the inhabitants of Croatia belong to 24 different minority nationalities. The process of national minority identification is still going on. So far Croatia has not succeeded - either in the conceptual or in the legal, political or organizational sense - to clerly define its policy towards the minorities. The state did not seek to preserve and develop the multicultural character of its society, or to lessen and gradually eliminate the Croatocentric approach. The main activities in this field are not an integral part of cultural policy exercised through the Ministry of Culture; rather, they largely depend on local communities, the motherland cultures of minorities, or on the funding provided directly by the government of Croatia.
