The semiconducting properties of passive tin electrodes in slightly alkaline solutions
The semiconducting properties of spectroscopically pure tin in 0.05 M borate buffer solutions pH=8.2 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, AC impedance and photopolarization measurements. Primary passivity of tin is attained by formation of monolayer of Sn(II) oxide/hydroxide film. At higher anodic oxidation potentials the Sn(OH)4 film was formed which film dehydrate to more stable SnO2 film. Impedance and photopolarization measurements give additional significant informations not only about the film formation process, but also about the electronic and semiconducting properties of passive film on tin surface. This film show n-type semiconducting properties with Mott-Schottky behaviour. Flat band potential and donor concentrations have been estimated.
