Attitudes of pre-school education students towards children with special needs

For centuries, isolation and segregation have been the usual way of treating people with disabilities. As the knowledge about occurrence and types of disabilities developed, the attitudes changed and new methods were applied, persons with special needs became more active participants, included in the everyday life of their surroundings. Children who have earlier been assigned to special forms of education are now being integrated into the regular education processes. There is a clear tendency to integrate younger children into the educational system, so that today we talk about inclusion of children with special needs into the early institutional education as a part of the early intervention. The inclusive approach widens the range of professionals that work directly with special needs children, so pre-school teachers are becoming more important factors in the process of rehabilitation. The effects of rehabilitation and educational work of these teachers do not depend only on the type and scope of the disability of a particular child, but also on the educator’s implicit pedagogies, attitudes and knowledge about children with special needs. As soon as they graduate, the pre-school teachers students become potential practitioners and experts, and getting an insight into their attitudes towards children with special needs can give us guidelines for further analysis of the importance of implicit pedagogies of educators and teachers and their competencies for work with special needs pre-school children. That is why this paper analyses the attitudes of pre-school teacher students towards children with special needs.
