The Translator of Nature

The predominant element in Chrystel Lebas photographs is the equilibrium between immobility and lastingness, the interchanging feeling of expectancy and failure. Forests and landscapes are depicted as submerged into late daylight that emerges from the background of the scene. Sometimes we see it distributed into small dots, entirely detached and unintelligible in its character ; within the frame we can often observe it from the side, introducing dynamics to the scene with diagonal rays that help us to discern the details of tree crowns. The lens is entirely static (this static quality is confirmed by video works from the same series, that in long, fixed frames follow the passage of time and the changing intensity of light), imbuing us with the impression that the persistence in viewing is rewarded with the clarity of all details that we gradually come to perceive in the background of the scene (being, same as thih French/British author, »condemned« to perseverance).
