Mitotic and chromosomal disturbances in the planarian Polycelis felina caused by manganese
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of manganese on the mitioc activity, mitotic abnormalities and chromosomal aberrations during neoblast division in planarian Polycelis felina. Manganese was found to cause a decrease in mitoitic activity after a 6-hour treatment and after a 24-hour recovery period. Mitotic abnormalities were found after each treatment but they increased with manganese concentration. Almost all mitotic abnormalities induced by the treatment and recovery period were the result od disturbed spindle mechanisms, e.g. C-mitosis, multipolar anaphase, and vagrant chromosomes accompanies by chromosome stickness.
