Acute neurological stroke care in Europe- results of the European stroke care inventory
Data from 22 countries were received and refered to almost one million strokes occuring per year in population of over 500 million. Most epidemiological data confirm an East-West gap known from previous studies. In eastern countries stroke was the leading caouse of death and 30 day case -fatality, and rates that were lower for overall hospitalization or availability of CT scanning. There were no differencies in total number of acute stroke units or the number of acute stroke units set up within neurological hospital departments nor for most other quality indicators with the exeption of technological standards in some countries. This epidemiological East-West gap is not reflected by most quality indicators for most acute stroke care, e.g. total number of acute stroke units within each country. The leading role of clinical neurology in acute stroke care is visible in most but not alll European countries.
