Kinetics of Organic-Inorganic Hybrids Formation by Sol-Gel Process

Kinetics of organic-inorganic hybrid formation was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermoset epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as organic precursor, and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) as inorganic precursor were polymerised simultaneously using poly(oxypropylene)diamine (JEFFAMINE D230) as a curing agent. Isothermal and dynamic DSC characterisation of DGEBA/JEFFAMINE and DGEBA/GLYMO/JEFFAMINE systems were performed at different temperatures and heating rates. Suitability of empirical models for describing the kinetics of reaction was investigated. Additionally, prepared materials were studied by extraction in tetrahydrofuran.
