GTEM Cell Setup and Method for Measuring Shielding Effectiveness of Resonant Enclosures
A novel method for measuring the shielding effectiveness of a resonant metallic enclosure having apertures in a side wall is presented. The enclosure was resonant with respect to the frequency range of interest, preventing the usage of the methods described in literature. The setup is based on GTEM cell as a compact field-generating environment, capable of accommodating smaller enclosures. The enclosure was placed inside the GTEM test volume with the examined side wall facing the apex. Shielding effectiveness was obtained as the reciprocal ratio of the field strength measured inside the enclosure once with the side wall attached to the enclosure, and again with no side wall attached. To avoid resonant effects of the unloaded enclosure, mechanical stirring was applied, turning the enclosure into a reverberation chamber. The resonances were then further suppressed by reducing the Q factor. This was achieved by loading the enclosure with several glasses of water, essentially producing a loaded reverberation chamber. The method produced logical and usable results.
