Tunnelling in Eocene Flysch : Results of Long Time Monitoring
The Eocene flysch in the region of Split (Croatia) is characterized by the presence of layers that can be described as the soft rocks by the mechanical means. When these materials are exposed to the weathering they reduce durability and strength. In the covered environment such as rock mass behind the tunnel lining is, weathering process require few years to develop. Reduction of strength and stiffness additionally increase deformability of rock mass around tunnel. Examples of two tunnels excavated in flysch formation in region around town Split are presented in the paper. In one case long time displacements were observed. Values of displacements were relatively small, but convergence to constant value of a displacement has taken more then ten years.
