QoS Management for Multimedia Services Based on Session Reconfiguration: A Future Internet Case Study
This paper presents a case study for an approach to managing Quality of Service (QoS) for real-time multimedia services by means of session reconfiguration. The key components of the proposed approach are: (1) mobility events that stem from session mobility and terminal mobility, and affect established QoS, and (2) basic operations that are called reconfiguration primitives. Mobility events drive the session reconfiguration, which then applies reconfiguration primitives to maintain or adapt QoS. A set of the required QoS functional aspects serves as the basis for modelling generic functional network architecture, which is closely outlined. The case study which involves applying the approach in a Future Internet architecture is described in more detail. It builds on a real-network prototype that facilitates session control and the QoS management by using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signalling. Demonstrated use case illustrates that QoS is maintained when a user switches from one terminal device to another.
