Using salt bath nitrocarburizing with post-oxidation for achieving better properties of steel parts
In order to improve mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of steel grade EN C45, the surface of the steel was subjected to the thermochemical modification by salt bath nitrocarburizing, with or without post-oxidation. A marked improvement in the steel properties is noted especially after the formation of iron oxide layer on the compound zone during the cooling process after nitrocarburizing and even more during the subsequent treatment in the oxidizing bath. For the evaluation of the effect of post-oxidation parameters on the surface hardness and on the resistance to corrosion and wear, test samples were subjected to electrochemical corrosion investigations and adhesion wear tests. The obtained results confirm favourable effects of the post-oxidation of nitrocarburized layer on the resistance to adhesion wear and to electrochemical corrosion. The same effect was not observed in non-oxidized steel.
