Uz Petrićev Index Pancosmiae

Frane Petrić's edition Nova de universis philosophia (Ferrariae, 1591) is divided into nine foliations. His philosophical system has been published in the first and second foliation, while the ninth contains the Subject Indices of the subject matter discussed in text of the first, second, fourth and seventh foliation of this edition. One of the indices is ťIndex PancosmiaeŤ which includes 107 entries on 97 subjects. An extremely complex structure of the 1591 edition demanded a detailed bibliographical description (see Appendix) as well as that of the development of Petrić's philosophical project in the period 1586?1591. The Subject Index of Pancosmia proved helpful to the comparative research on Petrić's terminology in natural philosophy. His vocabulary has been compared with two useful dictionaries of the similar kind: ťRječnik nazivaka, Ť compiled by Tomislav Ladan and published with the reprint and Croatian translation of Nova de universis philosophia (Zagreb, 1979), and Ljerka Schiffler's ťRječnik temeljnih pojmova Petrićeve prirodne filozofijeŤ (1997). As three separate Subject Indices have been published with Nova de universis philosophia, an additional comparative research has been carried out, aimed at establishing the relationship between ťIndex PancosmiaeŤ and ťIndex in Panaugiam, et Panarchiam, Ť the latter including 41 entries pertaining to natural philosophy. The majority of Petrić's entries on natural philosophy referred to in ťIndex in Panaugiam, et PanarchiamŤ have been followed by statements which directly point to the topics in the field of natural philosophy, representing at times an abridgment of the entire 'book' of Pancosmia. Thus Panaugia and Panarchia pave the way for the systematic elaboration on natural philosophy in Pancosmia. On the other hand, ťIndex in Panaugiam, et PanarchiamŤ brings to light a number of Petrić's views in natural philosophy which failed to appear in ťIndex Pancosmiae, Ť for instance, the statements describing the relationship between unity and all the multitudes, or the relationship between motion and time. ťIndex PancosmiaeŤ makes no references on these important matters even though Pancosmia does. Lastly, one should point to to the third feature of the terms pertinent to natural philosophy in the initial tomes of Nova de universis philosophia: Petrić employed them while creating his doctrine on light and principle. Comparative analysis has proved a fruitful method in terms of revealing the author who, while writing the entries for the ťIndex Pancosmiae, Ť pursues different yet inspiring approaches. ťIndex PancosmiaeŤ stands as an illustration of the natural philosopher's additional effort to rethink the already completed work.
