Marine diatoms in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The present study is being developed in the framework of research project dealing taxonomic composition and seasonality of benthic and planktonic marine diatoms in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Samples were taken monthly from March 2010 to April 2011 from depths of 1 and 8 m, and fixed in a 4% formalin solution. The collected samples were prepared for investigation by cleaning frustules using the method described by Hustedt (1930). Examination, identification and counting of benthic diatoms were carried out using the oil immersion lens (100 x) of the Microstar binocular microscope, AO Scientific Instruments. Photomicrographs were taken for the majority of taxa. A total of 233 diatom taxa belonging to 71 genera were identified. The species diversity decreased from July 2010 (80 taxa) to April 2011 (47 taxa). The highest number of taxa occurred within genera Nitzschia (25), Amphora (24), Mastogloia (14), Diploneis (12) and Licmophora (11). Eleven diatom taxa appear throughout whole year (Achnanthes brevipes C.A Agarddh, Ardissonia fulgens (Greville) Grunow, Auliscus sculptus (W. Smith) Ralfs in Prichard, Cooconeis scutellum Ehrenberg var. scutellum, Licmophora gracilis (Ehrenberg) Grunow var. gracilis, Licmophora remulus Grunow, Pleurosigma formosum W.Smith, Rhabdonema adriaticum Kützing, Surirella fastuosa (Ehrenberg) Kützing, Toxarium undulatum Bailey and Trachyneis aspera (Ehrenberg) Cleve). Surprisingly, diversity of benthic taxa differed significantly between the sampling depths. In April 2011, 47 taxa were found at the 1 m depth, while 77 taxa occurred at 8 m. Twenty-three taxa were only recorded at the depth of 8 m. Analyses that will detail the fine-scale spatial distribution of the density and abundance of diatoms are underway. These findings will contribute to essential base-line information that should aid in evaluating the state of this area in the future.
