Effect of tembotrione on antioxidant enzymes of velvet leaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.)

Tembotrione (commercial preparation „Laudis“) is a new herbicide developed for the selective post-emergence control of grass and broadleaved weeds in corn, including common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.). Tembotrione blocks the synthesis of plastoquinone which is required in the pathway of carotenoid biosynthesis. Depletion of carotenoids deprives chlorophyll, the sites of photosynthesis, of its protection against an overdose of light resulting in chlorophyll oxidation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of tembotrione on the effciency of photosystem II, chlorophylls and carotenoids as well as on antioxidant enzyme activities. Plants were treated with 0, 563 L / ha, 1, 125 L / ha i 2, 25 L / ha dose of herbicide for seven days. The herbicide caused the inhibition of photosystem II as well the activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase while the activity of ascorbat peroxidase increased. Malondialdehyde content of treated plants was increased which suggests great damage to membrane lipids. The results of the study implied that oxidative stress is included in the mechanism of herbicide action. Tembotrion was shown to be extremely efficient in common ragweed control.
