EUREKA E!4166 FIRECON - Fire resistant concrete made with steel slag as an aggregate
FIRECON is a Eureka project whose main goal is to verify the potential use of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slag in the refractory industry, as well as in precast concrete products. When exposed to higher temperatures, such slag undergoes a phase transformation from wüstite into magnetite, which is accompanied by volumetric expansion, introducing cracks in the concrete and drastically worsening its mechanical properties. Since the transformation which occurs above 800 oC is irreversible, previous thermal treatment of slag at temperatures of up to 1000 oC results in thermally stable aggregate, which can be used in the refractory industry at temperatures of up to 1100 oC. Results so far obtained show that thermally treated steel slag can be successfully used in refractory concrete. When used in structural concrete, slags can be considered as aggregates with good fire resistance, unless they are combined with Portland cement. This problem occurs due to the high coefficient of thermal expansion of slag, which is result of phase transformations and which causes deterioration on the aggregate-cement paste interface during heating, thus destroying the integrity of the concrete.
