Psychological distress and life satisfaction among the elderly: Relationships with some sociodemographic variables
Variables related to psychological distress and life satisfaction in the elderly were studied. The sample consisted of 158 persons over 60 years of age, who were not institutionalized. Questionnaires that measured sociodemographic characteristics, life satisfaction and psychic and somatic complaints were administered. Correlational analysis showed that the variables significantly related to psychological distress were prior employment status, education and age. Self-assessed financial status and marital status were found to have significant relationships with life satisfaction. The implications of findings for the quality of life among the elderly are discussed.
