Effects of the herbicide Dicuran 500 FL upon the mitosis of the planarian Polycelis felina (Daly.)
Background and purpose: Polycelis felina (Daly.) is a species with only one cell type, neoblasts, capable for mitosis. These cells are responsible for the regeneration processes in planarians. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of Dicuran 500 FL on mitosis of neoblasts. Materials and methods: After 72 hours of regeneration process, the animals were treated with 0.010mM, and 0.025mM respectively of aqueous solutions of herbicide Dicuran 500 FL, for the period of 4 hours. For the cytogenetic analysis, microscopic preparation of treated animals were made by use squach technique, stained and mounted in Euparal. Results: After treatment regenerates, there was increase in the neoblasts mitotic activity, as well as the blockage of mitosis in the metaphase of the cell division. Immediately, and 24 hours after the treatment of the planarian individuals, in the neoblasts were detected mitotic and chromosomal aberrations, such as C-mitosis, disturbed anaphase, chromosome stickiness and anaphase bridges. Conclusions: According to the results, the herbicide Dicuran 500 FL has expressive effect upon the genome of the Polycelis felina (Daly.) species. Therefore, the use of herbicide should be restricted, under the expert supervision and control.
