Engineering Work Perspectives and Sociocultural Fragments of Technical Education
The article draws on Sennet's distinction between craftsmanship and meritocracy as two opposite ideal-types of knowledge. Although Sennet suggests that the concept of meritocracy in "cutting edge" firms embodies ambiguous content with regard to skillfulness, applicable knowledge and excellence, it is possible to link its problematic characteristics with the dominant image of "cooperative knowledge systems" within the engineering academic curriculum. Comprising a broad area of non-technical subjects, cooperative knowledge systems are explored with regard to their own applicability in the context of technical educational knowledge-set and future engineering work perspectives.
