The effect of sodium -pentachlorophenate on histopatological changes in the digestive gland of the snail Amphimelania holandri Fér.

In this study the effect of the biocid sodium - pentachlorophenate (Na-PCP) on the freshwater snail Amphimelania holandri Fér. was investigated. Histopatological changes on the digestive gland, created by the effect of this compound on this species were determined by the analysis of histological preparations. It is well-known that the gland is the main detoxification organ where, because of greater lipid consistency lipofil ksenobiotics are accumulated. For this reason the gland was the starting point for the histapatological changes occurring under the influence of Na-PCP. The experiments were made as semistatic tests under conditions of acute and subcronic toxicity, in the concentration span of 0.56 - 56 mg Na-PCP /l. A death rate of animals, behavioural changes as well as morphopatological and histopatological changes of the digestive gland were taken as a criteria of Na-PCP toxicity. The medium lethal concentration (LC 50) value after 96 hours amounted to 0.76 mg Na-PCP/l. While observing the changes in animals" behaviour it was seen that concentrations > 3.2 mg/l in the period of acute toxicity caused a decrease in animals" activity, paralysis and death. With higher concentrations this changes appeared later. The histopatological changes on the digestive gland showed destruction of this organ was caused by the exposure of the animals to Na-PCP in acute toxicity conditions with high concentrations > 3.2 mg/l, as well as in subcronic toxicity conditions < 1.8 mg/l. On the basis of the analysis of the histological preparations. It was concluded that pathological changes appear in the course of vacuolisation of cells, enlargement of tubules diameter, erosis and sloughing of epithelial tubules, towards the creation of clusters of tubull cells and necrosis of connective tissue.
