Umbilical cord blood copper levels in preterm and IUGR newborns

The aim of this work was to determine copper content in umbilical cord blood in preterm and IUGR newborns. Samples of umbilical cord blood were collected at Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Rijeka during 1996 and 1997.The hospital provides medical assistance not only to the city residents (approx. 200 000 inhabitants) but also to population whose residence is within a radius of approximately 100 km from the city, with different climatological and socio-economic status. Obstetric history and other revelant maternal and family informations (age, parity, gestational age, smoking habits, and residence) were recorded regularly during the admission to the hospital. Birthweight, length, head circumference and Apgar score at 1st and 5th minute post partum were recorded at birth. Copper levels were analysed in 111 umbilical cord blood samples. Out of analysed samples, 13 were taken from preterm newborns (less than 37 weeks of gestation), while 14 from newborns with diagnosed IUGR. The control group consisted of 84 samples taken from regular deliveries. The mean concentration of copper in normal term deliveries was 6.38+-1.44 umol/l, and this value is comparable to the results obtained in Great Britain and Denmark. In the preterm deliveries the mean concentration of copper cord blood content was 4.85 +-2.2umol/l, and was significantly lower from the control group. The mean concentration of copper in IUGR newborns was 7.34+-1.53 umol/l, but this difference is not significant in relation of the control group. No association was found between copper cord blood content and anthropometric parameters like birth weight (r=0.1210, p=0.2730) or head circumference (r=0.1192, p=0.2832). No significant differences in copper concentrations were found in group comparisons regarding maternal age, parity, smoking habits and residence. Recent experinmental results confirmed that copper delivery to the fetus is related to placental concentration and that maternal protein malnutrition is a regulatory factor in fetal mineral homeostasis.
