Shuttle. Structural, Spectroscopic and Mechanical Aspects of the "Jumping Crystals" Phenomenon.
On the example of oxitropium bromide, a potent anticholinergic medicine, we have investigated here in great deal the thermosalient (jumping) effect - an outstanding mechanical property which could be an important physical basis of organic-based actuators. When heated, single crystals of this compound exhibit forceful jumps of up to several centimeters as result of structure switching over a thermal phase hysteresis. Bz using a combination of structural, microscopic, spectroscopic and thermoanalytical techniques, we pinned and nailed the origin of the poweful thermosalient effect of this compounds, and here we explain its molecular mechanism.
