Trace metals in agricultural soils of the Danube River tributary basin in Croatia

The main aims of the project «Geochemical mapping of agricultural soils of Croatia» are to assess soil quality, determine management and land conversion elements, and based on that assess risk of toxic element spreading into evironment, first of all into groundwater and surface water bodies. This alows sustainable managing of land and water resources in protected and especially sensitive areas of the Danube River basin in Croatia. The basin consists of Drava and Sava River basins, occupying 62% of the state territory, with 744456 ha of agricultural land. Intensive agriculture, industrial activities and growing municipal communities are potential sources of soil pollution if not properly managed and can have negative effects on soil functions and water quality. The first requirement for sustainable management is a determination of soil quality and pollution extent. A multi-element geochemical survey consists of soil sampling from 1294 locations according to regular sampling grids of the different distances. Element contents will be determined, a GIS geochemical database will be compiled followed by statistical and geostatistical analyses and mapping. The results obtained by the project will be used for support National soil protection strategy and the other legal regulations from the environmental protection domain, and thereby be of service of soil and water management in the Danube River basin. The results obtained so far indicate great variability of soil metal contents depending on soil type and land use.
