Oral Literature
Croatian oral literature (fairy tales, tales, legends and other prose forms; ritual and drama dialogues; epic and lyrical poems, ballads; sayings, riddles) are denoted and determined by deeply interwoven historical links. Croatian oral literature shows contacts and interweaving with diverse traditions, those of the Mediterranean Basin, Central Europe, Pannonia and the Balkans. These are the sources of its distinctive quality and profile. What makes the oral literature specifically Croatian is the Croatian language (in all its three dialects: Čakavian, Kajkavian and Štokavian). The article pays attention to the interweaving of oral and written literature, gives a short history of recordings, a survey of main genres, and explains the use of oral literary forms within customs and everyday life.
