Sažetak:
Many touristic centers in the Mediterranean began to develop as climate health resorts at the end of 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. For its urbanistic and spatial development and forming the image of the city the public parks and promenades, as well as park forests have significant role. Since climate conditions and therefore vegetation species and image of the cities in northern and southern Mediterranean are different, this paper deals with the examples in the northern Mediterranean. In the paper are given analysis of the most famous seaside resorts in Croatia - Opatija, Crikvenica, Veli Lošinj, Mali Lošinj and Rab in comparison with similar resorts in Italy (Sanremo, Rimini), France (Nice) and Slovenia (Portorož). The comparison was done by spatial, temporal and urbanistic aspects – the conditions of their development as top health resorts, time when their development as health resorts began and phases of the development, today's importance and types of tourism, and their urbanistic and spatial development. The differences and similarities were defined according to all those aspects. Especially, public parks and promenades of each city are analyzed and compared by their number and size, the time of their creation, the prevailing initiative that created them, the location within the town, attributes of design and style, and vegetation species. The analysis and comparison brought us to the conclusion that elements of park architecture, especially public city parks, promenades and park forests have exceptional town-shaping importance, which is manifested in the shaping of the plan and image of the town and its atmosphere. All those tourist centers have in common that parks during their historical development enriched the tourism and increased attractiveness of the resort, while a great number of vegetation species and exotic species proved great climate conditions. Public parks, promenades and park forests of the Cote d'Azur, Riviera dei Fiori, Rimini, Portorož and mentioned Croatian seaside resorts have big cultural and scientific value, for the history of the European park architecture, especially park architecture of seaside climate health resorts. Their educational function is also very important because many of the parks are botanical gardens due to richness of vegetation species. Besides they were always places for walk and social meetings, they had and still have great health and recreational importance, for which are very significant today’s parks in Rimini. Some of mentioned towns are positive examples of recognition of the importance of the parks for the current and future development of the town and therefore they don’t only protect historical parks but they also create modern theme parks. They include parks in tourist propaganda and publish its value in different publications and guides, as well on official web-sites of the town. This research was made as part of the scientific project Urbanistic and park heritage of Croatia as a part of European culture at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb.
