Photophysical study of aggregation of alkylenebisurea-naphthalenes, anthracenes and pyrenes
Selective detection of anionic analytes has attracted interest in the scientific community because of important roles anions play in a range of biological processes.(1) An important functional group which can bind anionic species is urea and thiourea.(2) Recently we reported synthesis and anion binding properties of a series of adamantyl-bisurea derivatives substituted with 2-naphthyl groups.(3) We found out that these 2-naphthyl derivatives selectively bind F- and H2PO4-, forming complexes with high association constants. In continuation of that research, and with the aim of finding selective fluorescent probes for anionic analytes, we changed the aromatic group in the compounds by better fluorophores such as 1-naphthyl, anthryl and pyrenyl. Herein we report on investigation of the photophysical properties of different adamantylbisurea derivatives by steady-state and time resolved fluorescence, in acetonitrile and DMSO solutions. In addition, we discovered that some structurally flexible compounds aggregate in acetonitrile. Formation of aggregates was characterized by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy.
