Fruit quality of Satsuma mandarin in Croatia – problems and perspectives

Satsuma mandarin is important export fruit crop in Croatia. It is exported to neighboring countries with a well developed consumption tradition. Annual production exceeds 40 000 tones. The main advantages of Croatian Satsumas are early maturation and good fruit quality compared with the other citrus producing countries in the Mediterranean region. Main factors affecting fruit quality are the lack of appropriate management practices such as pruning, early harvesting and decay. The most important physiological disorders are chilling injury (CI) and puffiness. The main cause of puffiness is the lack of regulation of crop load). Postharvest decay is often connected with fruit susceptibility to CI. Among postharvest treatments, only washing and waxing are applied. In spite of existing domestic knowledge in environmentally friendly postharvest treatments for controlling CI and decay, they are not applied in the industry. Although the overall situation is not bad, there is still space for the improvement of fruit quality if all important role-players in the sectors develop more intensive collaboration.
