Antimicrobial finishing
Polylactide (PLA) is one of the most promising biodegradable polymers owing to its mechanical property profile, thermoplastic processibility and biological properties. PLA is a thermoplastic, high-strength, high-modulus polymer that can be made from annually renewable proper resources to yield articles for use in either the industrial packaging field or in the biocompatible/bio absorbable medical device market. It is easily processed on standard plastics equipment to yield molded parts, films, membrane or fibers. In this research, we performed PLA surface modifications with silver, either as pure silver deposit or as silver nano-composite using plasma process. Antimicrobial activity of PLA films were measured against gram-positive bacteria Listeria monocytogenes (DMSZ15675) and gram-negative bacteria Salmonella typhimurium (TA100), using a standard test ISO 22196:2007. Surface modifications with pure silver deposit (DC magnetron sputtering) or as silver nano-composite (Low pressure plasma, significantly improve the antimicrobial properties of PLA films. Surface topography and size/distribution of Ag nanoparticles were found to influence the Ag ion release kinetics.
