Response of horse flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) to aged horse urine
The attraction of female horse flies to unbaited and single baited canopy traps, using pregnant mare horse urine, stallions urine, castrate horse urine and mare urine, was studied in the first experiment in the Monjoroš Forest. Horse flies were collected in a significantly higher number in traps baited with these urine compared to unbaited control traps. The pregnant mare horse urine collected 6.4 times more horse flies than unbaited traps, while stallions urine, castrate urine and mare urine baited traps collected 5.4, 3.9 and 3.5 times as many horse flies, respectively, than unbaited traps. In the second experiment, on the area of the Bansko Hill, also the same horse urine were used as attractants as in the first experiment. However, in the control trap was used 1-octen-3-ol as an attractant for evaluating the effectiveness of different horse urine. The number of females of horse flies collected from the canopy traps baited with aged horse urine (pregnant mare, stallions, castrate and mare urine) and 1-octen-3-ol did not differ significantly.
