Green Synthesis, X-ray and Spectroscopic Analysis of 2, 6–di(p–tolyl)–pyran–4–one
Pyrones are the fundamental moieties of a number of naturally occurring compounds as well as some synthetic compounds that show a variety of biological activities. They are the core of coumarin dyes and possess interesting optical properties. Additionally, pyrones are very useful synthetic reagents. Our previous work was focused on systematic research of synthesis and analysis of heterocyclic bioactive molecules. As a part of that research, our ongoing research includes „green” synthesis and structural characterization of a new derivative of pyrone which is assumed to be of biological and pharmacological importance. Synthesis via activation by microwave radiation showed advantages compared to classical organic synthesis, since it enables significant acceleration of organic reactions and gives greater efficiency in moderate reaction conditions. The structure of pyrone derivative, that was synthesized both by classical (18 h) and by microwave activation (30 min), was confirmed by 1H–NMR, 13C–NMR and IR spectroscopy. Furthermore, its crystal structure was determined and its behavior in solutions was examined. Various effects of media, such as temperature, pH and solvent used, on its ground and excited electron states, were investigated and are commented.
