Serum selenium, zinc and copper and ventilatory funcion test in female elderly Croatian general population

Pulmonary function in humans is influenced by several etiological factors including nutrition habits. The Mediterranean food could have a positive impact on factors of the oxidative stress, and influence on healthy ageing process. Zinc, copper and selenium are essential nutrients and key components of antioxidant enzymes. Aim of the study was to examine the relationship between ventilatory function tests with serum concentrations of selenium, zinc, and copper in elderly women older than 70 years. Results: a significant positive relationship between serum selenium and FEV1% ; statistically significant difference in FVC% and FEV1% between the group with normal and group with decreased serum selenium levels ; significantly higher serum selenium in the residents of Coastal area compared to residents of Continental area ; an inverse relationship between serum copper with regard to FVC% and FEV1%, and a positive relationship between serum selenium and Tiffeneau index in the residents of Continental area. Frequent consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables was positively associated with values of Tiffeneau index, while frequent consumption of fish is associated with higher concentrations of serum selenium. The results of this study confirm the significant role of selenium and copper in the ventilatory lung function. Nutrition reach in trace elements is important for ventilatory lung function and the defence of the body from many harmful substances from the environment.
